EDUC 613: Introduction to Individual Education Assessment
Assessment serves as a cornerstone of special education, both in terms of eligibility determination and instructional planning. This course will focus on the wide array of assessment methods available for identifying students with disabilities and evaluating their responsiveness to instruction, including norm-referenced tests, criterion-referenced assessment tasks, curriculum-based assessments and measurements, and dynamic assessment.

Artifact Description
The artifact I chose for EDUC 613 Introduction to Individual Education Assessment is an assessment that I designed to reflect a student's ability to wash his hands. In the class I learned how to create an informal assessment to meet the needs of students. This is an assessment I use in my classroom during a hand washing unit. The students are given this assessment before, during, and after the unit to assess their self-help skills and measure growth.
Professional Growth
Before this course I had no experience with formal assessments used in special education. I didn't know the role that assessment played in eligibility determination. I didn't understand the value of informal assessments in daily lessons in the classroom. I didn't use assessment to guide my instruction.
During this course I studied and practiced administering some widely used formal assessments. I learned how to create and use informal assessment within lessons to assess learning and guide instruction. I practiced creating assessments to evaluate students and measure their growth during and after a lesson.
Now, several years later, I continue to use the knowledge and skills that I gained in the class by incorporating assessment into my classroom everyday. I use formal, norm-based assessments every year for each student to measure growth. I also create and use informal assessments to check for learning within a lesson and growth after a lesson. I use assessments to show the IEP teams how the student has made progress academically, behaviorally, and functionally.
Understanding and Application of Standards
CEC Standard 4 Assessment: Beginning special education professionals use multiple methods of assessment and data-sources in making educational decisions.
Standard 4, Assessment, was addressed in this course through the learning of various kinds of assessments and the practice of administering assessments. I learned the value of using both formal and informal assessments with students in special education as well as how to create informal assessments to fit the needs of the students. I apply this standard in my classroom everyday when using assessments to guide my educational decisions, measure student growth, and discovering students strengths and weaknesses.
CEC Standard 5 Instructional Planning and Strategies: Beginning special education professionals select, adapt, and use a repertoire of evidence-based instructional strategies to advance learning of individuals with exceptionalities.
Standard 5, Instructional Planning and Strategies, was addressed in this course through learning how to use assessment to guide instruction and instructional strategies. I learned how to use assessments to determine if my instruction is appropriate based on student growth. I learned ways to assess and survey students to determine what adaptations and instructional styles would best work for them. I currently use assessments in my classroom to help select which type of instructional strategy would work for each student. After I've used that strategy, I assess the student to see if there is growth and progress in the curriculum.
Impact on Student Learning
Because of this class, my students are making steady progress toward their academic, behavioral, and life skills goals. They are doing work that is appropriate for them because I've learned how to assess current levels and progress. My students are engaged in the curriculum and respond to instruction because of assessment during instruction.
